Summary: Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a device that uses solar radiation to generate the high temperatures needed for industrial processes, potentially eliminating the need for fossil fuels in these applications. This thermal trap, consisting of a quartz rod and ceramic absorber, can reach temperatures up to 1050 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than previous studies. Large-scale solar concentrating technologies are already in use for power generation, but the new device minimizes radiative heat losses, improving efficiency. Detailed technical and economic analyses are still required to evaluate the scalability of this technology.
