Summary: Our research examines the impact of digitalization on society and democracy, particularly the convergence of digital, biotechnological, neurotechnological, and nanotechnological advancements. This convergence drives significant innovations but challenges conventional regulations. In a study with Marcello Ienca, we identified the risks and societal challenges posed by these technologies and stressed the need for international regulations. The merging of these technologies enables groundbreaking applications in personalized medicine and brain-computer interfaces but also poses severe risks such as data misuse and cybercrime. We advocate for a global regulatory framework with ten governance principles to safeguard personal integrity and privacy and ensure inclusive, transparent governance. Public discourse is essential to navigate the benefits and risks of technological convergence, ensuring it serves humanity positively.
