Summary: NASA has developed a new digital modeling tool called Aviary to help aeronautical engineers innovate new aircraft designs by creating simulations of conceptual aircraft and providing detailed data on their performance. Aviary is flexible and can integrate with other codes and programs, allowing researchers to input specific aircraft characteristics and receive tailored information. This tool builds on NASA’s legacy codes but offers enhanced capabilities, such as considering gradients and integrating modern concepts like hybrid-electric aircraft. Aviary is free, accessible to all, and hosted on GitHub, where it continues to grow through public contributions. The project involved NASA’s Glenn, Ames, and Langley Research Centers, with Jennifer Gratz leading its development and integration.
