Summary: NASA’s PREFIRE mission, consisting of twin CubeSats, will measure heat radiated from Earth’s polar regions to improve climate models. These satellites will provide new insights into how the Arctic and Antarctic emit far-infrared energy, crucial for understanding the greenhouse effect and polar warming. By focusing on far-infrared wavelengths, PREFIRE will fill gaps in knowledge about how snow, ice, and clouds influence heat loss at the poles. The mission’s data will enhance predictions of sea level rise, ice melt, and global weather patterns. Developed with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, PREFIRE also trains the next generation of climate scientists.
